Gaza’s Eltiqa collective holds show in exile in Dubai. As a retrospective at Jameel Arts Centre gathers together two decades of work from around the globe
Eltiqa (Arabic for “encounter”) is an artist collective from Gaza City founded in 2000. For over twenty years, Eltiqa members have developed artistic practices together – including the setting up of a dedicated exhibition and workshop space in Gaza City, and supporting younger generations of artists through workshops, exhibitions and by offering a space to meet and dialogue.  

‘Eltiqa: How to Work Together?’ includes a selection of Eltiqa’s artworks spanning several years of collaboration. The works on display were collected from various locations worldwide, remaining safe and intact  – sometimes over many years – thanks to a trusted network of individuals and institutions that safeguarded them. Some artworks produced and exhibited years ago remained with institutions and individuals because of the difficulty of returning them to Gaza. Meanwhile, other works were transported out of Gaza by artists and their respective networks during the ongoing genocide. 

Included in the exhibition is an annotated timeline that traces the history of Eltiqa – the collective’s formation and early days, their efforts at creating structures of support for themselves and others, and the historical, political and personal events that have marked their lives as a collective and as individuals. Through anecdotes recounted by members of Eltiqa and research conducted by The Question of Funding collective, the displayed narratives accentuate Eltiqa’s practice and survival amid political, social, economic and personal distress. 

This presentation is part of a long-term collaboration between The Question of Funding collective and Eltiqa. A previous iteration of the exhibition was conceived for documenta15 (2022), and the present expanded display accounts for personal and political upheavals in Gaza and the artists’ individual lives since then.

El colectivo Eltiqa de Gaza presenta una exposición en el exilio en Dubái. Esta retrospectiva en el Centro de Artes Jameel reúne dos décadas de trabajo de todo el mundo.

Eltiqa (en árabe, "encuentro") es un colectivo artístico de la ciudad de Gaza fundado en el año 2000. Durante más de veinte años, los miembros de Eltiqa han desarrollado prácticas artísticas conjuntas, incluyendo la creación de un espacio dedicado a exposiciones y talleres en la ciudad de Gaza, y el apoyo a las jóvenes generaciones de artistas mediante talleres, exposiciones y un espacio de encuentro y diálogo.

"Eltiqa: ¿Cómo trabajar juntos?" incluye una selección de obras de Eltiqa que abarcan varios años de colaboración. Las obras expuestas fueron recopiladas de diversos lugares del mundo y se mantuvieron intactas y seguras, en ocasiones durante muchos años, gracias a una red de confianza de personas e instituciones que las protegieron.

Algunas obras producidas y expuestas hace años permanecieron en manos de instituciones y personas debido a la dificultad de devolverlas a Gaza. Mientras tanto, otras obras fueron trasladadas fuera de Gaza por artistas y sus respectivas redes durante el genocidio en curso.

La exposición incluye una cronología anotada que recorre la historia de Eltiqa: la formación y los inicios del colectivo, sus esfuerzos por crear estructuras de apoyo para sí mismos y para otros, y los acontecimientos históricos, políticos y personales que han marcado sus vidas como colectivo y como individuos.

A través de anécdotas relatadas por miembros de Eltiqa y la investigación realizada por el colectivo The Question of Funding, las narrativas expuestas resaltan la práctica y la supervivencia de Eltiqa en medio de la angustia política, social, económica y personal.

Esta presentación forma parte de una colaboración a largo plazo entre el colectivo The Question of Funding y Eltiqa. Una versión anterior de la exposición se concibió para documenta15 (2022), y la presente exposición ampliada da cuenta de las convulsiones personales y políticas en Gaza y de la vida individual de los artistas desde entonces.
