La «chapuza» al intentar borrar el nuevo mural de Banksy en Londres: «Han creado un nuevo icono»

¿La peor limpieza de un grafiti en un monumento?

Analicemos una de las acciones más mediáticas en la trayectoria de Banksy... y su lamentable limpieza.

El 8 de septiembre de 2025 se descubrió un mural de Banksy en un muro exterior de los Tribunales Reales de Londres. El mural mostraba a un juez golpeando con su mazo a un manifestante (pro-palestino) que sostenía una pancarta.

Lo habéis visto en medios y se ha viralizado.
El edificio de los Tribunales es un monumento de Grado I; los monumentos de mayor valor ("exceptional interest") de Reino Unido.

Pero Banksy, que es muy listo, no pintó el mural sobre el monumento antiguo, sino en un edificio moderno. En lugar de pintar la fachada monumental que da al Strand, que sería un grave atentado patrimonial, eligió una puerta lateral de la paralela Carey Street y pintó sobre un muro moderno que no forma parte dekl monumento.

Como maestro de la cultura visual, la exacta elegida por Banksy es idónea.

Esquiva el daño patrimonial (no es un edificio de especial valor el afectado) pero garantiza la imagen icónica, con el monumento neogótico, en el plano que buscará la prensa. Image
Aunque el muro que realmente ha vandalizado es un muro normal, actual, sin relevancia histórica.

Y justo debajo de una cámara de vigilancia.

La acción de Banksy se viraliza y en pocas horas se da orden de cubrir el mural.

Que uno de los países más desarrollados del mundo cubra así un grafiti (con una lona pegada con cinta americana, unas chapas cutres de obra y dos vigilantes) da para una buena sitcom.Image
Se monta un despliegue mediático, con la policía científica fotografiando el mural.

Como ya dije estos días, otros murales de Banksy se conservan casi como monumentos, pero en este caso lo tratan como un delito de vandalismo común.

Da para reflexión. 
Como en este caso no quieren que el mural atraiga turistas, encargan una "limpieza".

Llega a un muchacho (con pasamontañas) y con UN CEPILLO DE PÚAS METÁLICAS y algún tipo de disolvente FROTA la pared.

(Nota: Hace más daño eso al muro que el grafiti) 
El resultado final lo podía anticipar cualquiera que sepa de restauración o de simple limpieza.

Si quieres sacar esas tintas de la piedra tienes que usar otros materiales que la extraigan o un láser que la "saque".

Han creado un nuevo icono. 
Así es como se limpian pintadas en piedra en países serios, como Italia o España: Profesionales. Láser. Sin prisas.

(Luego hay que ver en medios del Reino Unido bromitas sobre sobre el Ecce Homo de Borja y las restauraciones de otros países).

BRIEF ANATOMY OF A BOTCH-UP

The court is erasing Banksy's mural just like it's erasing our right to protest.  It only took 48 hours for the Royal Courts of Justice to scrub out a @Banksy showing a judge striking down a protester with his gavel. Silencing a work of art about silencing protest? Maybe it was a little too close to home.

The worst graffiti cleanup on a monument? Let's analyze one of the most high-profile actions in Banksy's career... and its lamentable cleanup.

On September 8, 2025, a Banksy mural was discovered on an exterior wall of the Royal Courts in London. The mural depicted a judge striking a protester holding a banner with his gavel. You've seen it in the media, and it's gone viral.

The Courts building is a Grade I listed monument; the most valuable ("exceptional interest") in the United Kingdom.

But Banksy, being very clever, didn't paint the mural on the ancient monument, but on a modern building. Instead of painting the monument's facade facing the Strand, which would be a serious breach of heritage, he chose a side door on the parallel Carey Street and painted over a modern wall that is not part of the monument.

As a master of visual culture, the exact location Banksy chose is ideal. It avoids heritage damage (it's not a building of particular value that's been affected) but guarantees the iconic image, with the neo-Gothic monument, in the shot the press will be looking for.

Although the wall he actually vandalized is a normal, modern wall, with no historical significance. And right under a surveillance camera. Banksy's action goes viral, and within a few hours, the order is given to cover the mural.

The chosen wall doesn't belong to the monument, but to the adjacent office building, as I mentioned before.

For one of the most developed countries in the world to cover up graffiti in this way (with a tarp taped with duct tape, some cheap construction sheets, and two security guards) makes for a good sitcom. Image A media hype ensues, with forensic investigators photographing the mural.

 As I've mentioned in recent days, other Banksy murals are preserved almost as monuments, but in this case, it's treated as a crime of common vandalism. It's food for thought.

Since in this case they don't want the mural to attract tourists, they commission a "cleaning."

A young man (wearing a ski mask) arrives and, with a metal-bristled brush and some kind of solvent, scrubs the wall. (Note: This does more damage to the wall than the graffiti itself.)

The final result could have been predicted by anyone who knows anything about restoration or simple cleaning. If you want to remove those inks from the stone, you have to use other materials to extract them or a laser to "remove" them.

They've created a new icon. This is how stone graffiti is cleaned in reputable countries, like Italy or Spain: Professionals. Lasers. No rush.

(Then you have to see the jokes in the UK media about the Ecce Homo of Borja and the restorations in other countries.)
