CALL TO ACTION To Every Mental Health and Healthcare Professional Globally

Today, 30 Sept 2024, I am sharing a piece, "Oath of Mental Health Professionals and Healthcare Workers for Liberation." This is in recognition of World Mental Health Day coming up on 10.10.24. This oath is my call to every one of you—my colleagues across the world—to listen with both your heart and your mind. It is time for us to recognize the profound role we play in the liberation of oppressed communities, and the immense responsibility we carry in this struggle.

As mental health professionals, our work is not confined to clinics or hospitals. We are witnesses to the world’s suffering, and we must be advocates for justice and human dignity. Our patients cannot find true healing in a world where oppression reigns. Liberation and mental health are intertwined, and we must be the healers who stand for both.

I invite you to take this oath with me as well as:
- Commit to challenging systems of oppression and dehumanization.
- Stand with those impacted by colonialism, war, and injustice.
- Use your voice and your platform to uplift those silenced by oppression.
- Let us promote not only healing but freedom and justice in every aspect of our work.

Let us unite, as healers and defenders of human rights, to bring about a world where mental health is synonymous with justice and liberation.

ENGLISH, OATH

In the spirit of justice and the quest for freedom, I take this oath as a mental health professional and a doctor:

I vow to stand firmly against all forms of colonialism, racism, oppression, and exploitation, recognizing that my role is not merely to treat symptoms, but to challenge the systems that dehumanize and subjugate. I will never be complicit in or silent about acts of torture, and I will expose all forms of oppression and injustice.

I will hold sacred the dignity, culture, and history of every individual and community I serve, striving to heal the wounds inflicted by oppression and supporting the reclaiming of identity and agency that colonialism seeks to erase. I will listen with deep respect to those who have been silenced, ensuring that their voices guide my actions and decisions. I will amplify their calls for justice, standing beside them in solidarity.

I will foster the collective healing of traumatized communities, understanding that true restoration requires the mending of both the personal and the social fabric. I will advocate for justice and work to transform the conditions that perpetuate suffering and despair. I will honor the courage and resilience of those who resist oppression, recognizing their struggle as a vital and healthy response to injustice. I will reject any attempt to pathologize their resistance, upholding their right to fight for their freedom and dignity.

I will conduct myself with humility and a commitment to unlearning biases and assumptions that may cloud my judgment. I will seek wisdom from those who have endured the weight of colonialism and oppression, allowing their experiences to shape my practice. I will learn from the experiences of liberated peoples and continue to develop my knowledge and expertise in serving the causes of justice and liberation.

In all these endeavors, I will not use my profession as a tool of control, but as an instrument of liberation and healing. I will dedicate myself to the pursuit of justice, freedom, and dignity for all, until the chains of oppression are broken and every human being can live with honor and peace.

Thus, I commit to uphold this oath with unwavering resolve throughout my professional journey, welding my strength and passion to forge a more just and humane world.

This is my promise, my invocation of liberation.

 

 

ESPAÑOL JURAMENTO

 

Juramento de profesionales de la salud mental y de la sanidad por la Liberación

 

 

En nombre de la justicia y la búsqueda de la libertad, hago este juramento como profesional de la salud mental y médico:

 

Prometo oponerme firmemente a todas las formas de colonialismo, racismo, opresión y explotación, reconociendo que mi rol no es simplemente el de tratar los síntomas, sino el de desafiar los sistemas que deshumanizan y subyugan. Nunca seré cómplice ni guardaré silencio ante actos de tortura y expondré todas las formas de opresión e injusticia.

 

Consideraré sagrada la dignidad, la cultura y la historia de cada persona y comunidad a la que sirvo, esforzándome por sanar las heridas infligidas por la opresión y apoyando la recuperación de la identidad y la agencia que el colonialismo busca eliminar. Escucharé con profundo respeto a las personas que han sido silenciadas, asegurándome de que sus voces guíen mis acciones y decisiones. Amplificaré sus invocaciones a la justicia, estando a su lado en solidaridad.

 

Fomentaré la curación colectiva de comunidades traumatizadas, entendiendo que la verdadera restauración requiere la reparación del tejido personal y social. Abogaré por la justicia y trabajaré para transformar las condiciones que perpetúan el sufrimiento y la desesperación. Honraré el coraje y la resiliencia de quienes resisten la opresión, reconociendo su lucha como una respuesta vital y saludable a la injusticia. Rechazaré cualquier intento de patologizar su resistencia, defendiendo su derecho a luchar por su libertad y dignidad.

 

Me comportaré con humildad y mantendré el compromiso de olvidar los prejuicios y suposiciones que puedan nublar mi juicio. Buscaré la sabiduría de aquellas personas que han soportado el peso del colonialismo y la opresión, permitiendo que sus experiencias configuren mi práctica. Aprenderé de las experiencias de los pueblos liberados y continuaré desarrollando mis conocimientos y experiencia al servicio de las causas de la justicia y la liberación.

 

En todos estos esfuerzos, no utilizaré mi profesión como una herramienta de control, sino como un instrumento de liberación y curación. Me dedicaré a la búsqueda de la justicia, la libertad y la dignidad para todos, hasta que se rompan las cadenas de la opresión y cada ser humano pueda vivir con honor y paz.

 

Así pues, me comprometo a mantener este juramento con determinación inquebrantable a lo largo de mi trayectoria profesional, uniendo mi fuerza y pasión para forjar un mundo más justo y humano.

Esta es mi promesa, mi invocación de liberación.

Jurament dels i de les professionals de la salut mental i del personal sanitari per l'Alliberament

 

 

En nom de la justícia i la recerca de la llibertat, faig aquest jurament com a professional de la salut mental i mèdic:

 

Prometo oposar-me fermament a totes les formes de colonialisme, racisme, opressió i explotació, tot reconeixent que el meu rol no és només tractar els símptomes, sinó desafiar els sistemes que deshumanitzen i subjuguen. Mai no seré còmplice ni guardaré silenci davant d'actes de tortura i exposaré totes les formes d'opressió i d'injustícia.

 

Consideraré sagrada la dignitat, la cultura i la història de cada persona i comunitat a la qual serveixo, esforçant-me per curar les ferides infligides per l'opressió i recolzant la recuperació de la identitat i l'agència que el colonialisme cerca eliminar. Escoltaré amb profund respecte aquelles persones que han estat silenciades, assegurant-me que les seves veus guiïn les meves accions i decisions. Amplificaré les seves invocacions a la justícia, al seu costat i en solidaritat.

 

Fomentaré la curació col·lectiva de comunitats traumatitzades, entenent que la veritable restauració requereix la reparació del teixit personal i social. Advocaré per la justícia i treballaré per transformar les condicions que perpetuen el patiment i la desesperació. Honoraré el coratge i la resiliència dels i de les qui resisteixen l'opressió, reconeixent llur lluita com una resposta vital i saludable a la injustícia. Rebutjaré qualsevol intent de patologitzar la seva resistència, defensant el seu dret a lluitar per la llibertat i la dignitat.

 

 

Em comportaré amb humilitat i amb el compromís d'oblidar els prejudicis i les suposicions que puguin enfosquir el meu judici. Buscaré la saviesa de les persones que han suportat el pes del colonialisme i l'opressió, permetent que les seves experiències configurin la meva pràctica. Aprendré de les experiències dels pobles alliberats i continuaré desenvolupant els meus coneixements i experiència al servei de les causes de la justícia i l'alliberament.

 

En tots aquests esforços, no faré servir la meva professió com una eina de control, sinó com un instrument d'alliberament i curació. Em dedicaré a la recerca de la justícia, la llibertat i la dignitat per a tothom, fins que es trenquin les cadenes de l'opressió i que cada ésser humà pugui viure amb honor i pau.

 

Així doncs, em comprometo a mantenir aquest jurament amb determinació infrangible durant la meva trajectòria professional, unint la meva força i passió per crear un món més just i humà.

Aquesta és la meva promesa, la meva invocació d’alliberament.
