Madleen Kullab  : La gazatí que inspiró el buque de la Flotilla Libertad 

El nombre de Madleen para el buque es un verdadero homenaje a su valentía y a la lucha de los palestinos bajo bloqueo. El Madleen, con su tripulación de 12 voluntarios, incluyendo a la activista climática Greta Thunberg, se dirige a Gaza con la ayuda necesaria. Se espera que el barco, que zarpó de Catania, Sicilia, el 1 de junio de 2025, llegue al enclave asediado en siete días. El Madleen es el último buque en intentar romper el bloqueo israelí a Gaza y entregar alimentos y ayuda humanitaria desesperadamente necesarios.

El buque lleva el nombre de Madleen Kullab, de 29 años, la única pescadora de Gaza. Su papel pionero en una profesión tradicionalmente dominada por hombres la ha convertido en un símbolo de resiliencia y determinación frente a la adversidad. La joven gazatí navegaba hacia el mar junto a su padre a la temprana edad de 6 años cada mañana. En un videodocumental publicado por Al Jazeera, Madleen relató que, tras visitar el mar con frecuencia, lo convirtió en un pasatiempo e incluso aprendió a manejar el barco por sí misma. Siendo la mayor de la familia, cuando su padre enfermó, no tuvo más remedio que hacerse cargo del barco para mantener a su familia. "El mar se convirtió en parte de mi vida. Es la única vía de escape en Gaza", afirmó. A los 13 años, Madleen y sus dos hermanos menores comenzaron a explorar el mar por su cuenta. Compaginando sus estudios con la pesca, se convirtió en la primera pescadora de Gaza. Lo que antes era un pasatiempo para la pequeña, ahora se ha convertido en la fuente de ingresos de la familia. Madleen también ha organizado un taller para mujeres de la zona, enseñándoles a pescar y a fabricar redes.

Se creó un Club de Pesca para Mujeres, dirigido a quienes trabajan en el mar y a las esposas de los pescadores. Por lo tanto, el nombre del buque Madleen es un verdadero homenaje a su valentía y a la lucha de los palestinos bajo bloqueo. Mientras tanto, el Madleen emprendió su viaje tan solo un mes después de que drones israelíes bombardearan el Conscience, otro barco de ayuda humanitaria de la FFC, frente a las costas de Malta.

La FFC ha enfatizado que todos los voluntarios y la tripulación a bordo del Madleen están entrenados en no violencia y navegan desarmados en un acto pacífico de resistencia civil contra las acciones de Israel en Gaza. Según el comunicado de prensa, la flotilla transporta artículos de necesidad urgente en Gaza, incluyendo suministros médicos, harina, arroz, leche de fórmula, pañales, productos sanitarios femeninos, kits de desalinización de agua, muletas y prótesis infantiles.

Madleen Kullab: The Gazan Woman Who Inspired The Flotilla Vessel
The naming of the vessel after Madleen is a true tribute to her courage and the broader struggle of Palestinians under blockade.
The Madleen and its crew of 12 volunteers, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, is on its way to Gaza carrying necessary aids. The sail that had set from Catania, Sicily, on June 1, 2025, is expected to reach the besieged enclave within seven days.
Madleen is the latest vessel to try and break Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver desperately needed food and aid. The vessel had been named after 29-year-old Madleen Kullab, Gaza’s only fisherwoman. Her pioneering role in a traditionally male-dominated profession has made her a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
The young Gazan woman sailed to the sea along with her father at her very young age of 6 every morning. In a video documentary posted by Al Jazeera, Madleen said that after being a constant visitor of the sea, she eventually developed it as a hobby and further even learned to operate the boat by herself.
Being the eldest in the family, when her father got sick, she had no other choice but to take over to support her family. “The sea became a part of my life. It’s the only escape in Gaza,” she said.
It was at the age of 13 when Madleen and her two younger brothers started heading to the sea on their own. Balancing her studies along with fishing, she became Gaza’s first fisherwoman. Once a hobby to the little girl, it now became the source of their family’s income.
Madleen has also set up a workshop for women in the area, teaching them how to fish and how to make fishing nets. A Women’s Fishing Club was set up, targeting those who work at sea and the wives of the fishermen.
Thus, the naming of the vessel after Madleen is a true tribute to her courage and the broader struggle of Palestinians under blockade.
Meanwhile, the Madleen vessel, which embarked on its journey just one month after Israeli drones had bombed Conscience, another FFC aid ship, off the coast of Malta.
The FFC has emphasised that all volunteers and crew on board Madleen are trained in nonviolence and are sailing unarmed in a peaceful act of civil resistance against Israel’s actions in Gaza. As per the press release, the flotilla is carrying things urgently needed in Gaza, including medical supplies, flour, rice, baby formula, nappies, women’s sanitary products, water desalination kits, crutches, and children’s prosthetics.
