Torture in Israel. Medical participation: torturers (Israel) and tortured (Palestine). Where is the doctor? If there is systematic torture, the doctor is with the torturers.
HealthWorkers4PalestineSpain
Summary
The atrocities that Israel commits against Palestine are an expression of colonial policies that seek the appropriation of movable and immovable property and the “annihilation of the native population.”
Israel’s apartheid and occupation regime and policies are inextricably linked to human rights violations. In other words, they are policies that seek to eliminate all resistance by taking away dignity, solidarity and tenderness, as well as art and culture, because, to establish a colonial regime, it is not enough to kill, it is necessary to terrorize and degrade people and populations. This is achieved, in large part, with the illegal detention and systematic torture of thousands of persons.
When there is systematic torture, medical presence is essential, as has been documented multiple times in Israel. And the issue is not one of sadistic and/or degenerate professionals, but something institutional, of the Israeli health corps and, ultimately, of the entire Israeli society.
Israeli health personnel participate in multiple ways in degrading practices against Palestinian prisoners, from torture in the prisons themselves to the non-compliance with mandatory regulations in Israeli hospitals where imprisoned patients are taken, including participation in illegal transplants (skin, cochlea, cornea, kidney, etc).
Specifically, regarding torture in prisons and detention centers, Israeli doctors cooperate in
1/ the initial assessment (ignoring in many cases the bad conditions of admission, from illness to injuries),
2/ the lack of documentation and registration of the damage caused by torture,
3/ the provision of low-quality services and superficial care,
4/ the sharing of information with the torturers,
5/ the failure to report torture and
6/ the practice of all this seeking anonymity.
The systematic destruction of health facilities and the deliberate detention, torture and murder of Palestinian health professionals by Israel is part of a general colonialist plan of genocide and “dissolution” of the structures and determinants that help us live as humans in society, a plan to dilute the “glue” that makes us human.
Such an amoral society that tolerates the annihilation and loss of human rights of another society is a sick society that poisons the lives of its own citizens.
The Israeli colonizing society cannot escape what happens in the colony (occupied Palestine) and the ideology of racist laws, the normalization of dispossession and oppressive brutality does not stop there, it returns and contaminates the thought, the arts, justice and life of Israel itself.
Israel is a danger to itself, to Palestine, and to Humanity.
Torture is unethical, it is senseless brutality, and it is also ineffective (the information obtained is what is wanted, even if it is false and forced by desperation).
The end does not justify the means, never, EVER. Not even in “the war against terrorism.”
Unfortunately, neither the “Tokyo Declaration” of the World Medical Association (against the participation of doctors in torture and degrading treatment of detained and/or imprisoned persons), nor the “Istanbul Protocol”, nor the “Nelson Mandela Rules” of the United Nations (“Manual for the effective investigation and documentation of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”, “United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners”) are considered or taught in undergraduate and postgraduate studies in health sciences.
In short: “I will not use my medical knowledge to violate human rights and civil liberties, even under threat.”

CHILDREN
Palestinian children (there are between 500 and 1000 children held in Israeli military detention each year) in the Israel military detention system face physical and emotional abuse, with four out of five (86%) of them being beaten, and 69% strip-searched, according to new research by Save the Children. Nearly half (42%) are injured at the point of arrest, including gunshot wounds and broken bones. Some report violence of a sexual nature and some are transferred to court or between detention centres in small cages, the child rights organisation said.
NOTE
“Western” nations have supported Israel since its founding in 1948, as demonstrated by their tolerance of its systematic failure to comply with international agreements and laws.
They also support the ongoing genocide, including the “demonization” that justifies the targeted destruction of health facilities and the murder, imprisonment and torture of health professionals.
It is worth bearing in mind, for example, an Israeli amendment that was adopted at the World Health Assembly (WHO, World Health Organization) on May 31, 2024. The Israeli amendment “calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza, including children, women and the elderly, and condemns the use by armed groups of health facilities, including hospitals and ambulances, which endangers the civilian population.”
The amendment received broad support, from traditional allies such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany, to countries that often oppose Israel in international forums, such as Iceland, Spain and the Philippines

Israel accused of torturing Palestinian workers to death
Palestinian workers detained during the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023 were abused by Israeli prison guards, with some of them tortured to death or disappeared, according to testimonies collected by a Palestinian trade union.
Many Palestinian workers were also abused by their employers, who refused to pay salaries, spit on them and subjected them to humiliation and insults.

Dr. Abu Safiya Reports Torture and Severe Abuses in Israeli Custody
When he was captured from Gaza and transferred to the Sde Teiman military detention camp, he was subjected to various forms of torture and inhuman and degrading treatment—methods that are emblematic of Israeli mass arrest operations in Gaza. He reported being forcibly stripped, having his hands tightly shackled, and being made to sit on sharp gravel for approximately five hours by Israeli forces. He was also subjected to severe physical abuse, including beatings with batons and electric shock sticks, as well as repeated blows to the chest.
In Ofer Prison, where he was transferred on 9 January 2025, he was held in solitary confinement for 25 days—a period so prolonged as to constitute a form of torture in itself. During this time, he endured nearly continuous interrogation for 10 days. At one point, he lost consciousness in his cell due to severe breathing difficulties. During interrogation, Dr. Abu Safiya was confronted with accusations that he firmly denied, stressing that he is a doctor whose sole duty is to provide medical care to patients and the wounded.
He also reported a severe decline in his health, with his weight dropping from 96 kg to 84 kg, a 12 kg loss in less than two months—further evidence of Israel's systematic starvation policies against Palestinian prisoners and detainees. Additionally, he disclosed that he suffers from heart muscle enlargement. Despite repeatedly requesting medical attention from Israeli authorities, he has been systematically denied access to a specialist examination and deprived of essential care, further endangering his already deteriorating condition.

Shatha Hanaysha
My brother, Assem Hanaysha, has been in administrative detention — imprisonment without charge or trial — for over a year now. During the month of Ramadan last March, a heavy piece of news reached him in the cells of the Naqab prison: that I, his sister Shatha, had been killed.
The news reached my brother as he languished in conditions lacking the most basic necessities of life, and with no means of verifying the information or communicating with the outside world. Surrounded by isolating walls and cut off from the news, with illnesses eating away at his body due to scabies, malnutrition, and stomach and dental problems, Assem carried this news with him and lived through hellish days believing that I was gone forever.
It was not easy to verify the truth.
Every attempt to deliver a piece of information to him became a long, difficult journey punctuated by long stretches of waiting due to complications imposed by the occupation on lawyers. These restrictions have at times made it nearly impossible for prisoners to access their lawyers, who are the only source of news they have about what is going on in the outside world, including news of the progress of the war. But after protracted efforts, we managed to reach a lawyer who was going to visit detainees at Naqab prison.
The plan was simple: the lawyer would deliver a verbal message to one of the prisoners, who would then pass it along through the sections and rooms, hoping it would reach Assem after a few days. The message was equally simple: “Your sister Shatha is well. She is alive.”
But even before the message reached him, the lawyer discovered something grave. After finishing his visit, he confirmed to us that every prisoner he met asked the same question as soon as they saw him: “Do you have any information about the journalist, the sister of the prisoner Assem Hanaysha? We heard that she was martyred.”
The extent of the terror that had been planted in my brother’s heart was evidenced by the fact that he had asked any prisoner due to see a lawyer to ask about my fate. It shows the depth of the pain endured by prisoners who are isolated from their families and their worlds.

Horrific Torture of Palestinian Hostages in Israeli Sde Teiman Prison Exposed
Palestina.
‘Guards Have No Names, No Detainees Allowed to Leave’ – Israel’s Secret Prison
“No detainee is allowed to leave the wing for any reason – not to meet with a lawyer, receive medical treatment, or attend court hearings.”
New details have emerged about a secret underground wing inside the Israeli Ayalon Prison, known as “Rakevet,” where dozens of Palestinian detainees are being held under conditions described as “harsh and extreme.”
In a recent report by the Israeli public broadcaster KAN, cited by the Anadolu news agency, the Rakevet wing is a heavily fortified underground facility equipped with advanced surveillance systems and strict security measures.
According to KAN, detainees there are kept in sealed cells for 23 hours a day, with only one hour allowed in a small enclosed concrete yard where limited sunlight passes through.
“During this hour, detainees are prohibited from speaking to each other. The hour includes showering and walking, and the yard walls are adorned with large images of the destruction in Gaza, clearly visible to the prisoners,” the report stated.
It added that “No detainee is allowed to leave the wing for any reason – not to meet with a lawyer, receive medical treatment, or attend court hearings.”
According to an Al Jazeera Arabic report, Israeli Prime Minister visited the detention facility on July 30, along with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who stated, “We cannot allow the new Yahya Sinwar to emerge from here.”
Constructed deep underground, the facility was designed to resemble a tightly closed box on all sides, dividing it into narrow, windowless cells devoid of any light, the report stated.

Israel returns 195 dead bodies to Gaza, many mutilated with hands bound, signs of torture,
The Gaza Ministry of Health published photos of the mutilated bodies of Palestinian prisoners. Most of them showed clear signs of torture — hands and feet bound, blindfolded, bodies showing marks of tank tracks, burns, fractures, and deep wounds.
Palestinian Mervat Sarhan has returned to Gaza after nearly five months in Israeli detention, where she says she endured beatings, electric shocks and threats to kill her children during interrogations.

PCHR Palestinian Centre for Human Rights Sends Evidence of Systematic Torture and Ill-Treatment of Palestinian Detainees in Israeli Detention to the Committee Against Torture Ahead of its 86th Session
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) sent a 75-page submission to the Committee Against Torture ahead of its review of Israel during its upcoming 86th session, scheduled to take place on 10 November 2025.
The Committee is a treaty body composed of ten independent human rights experts that monitors the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment by its States. In line with its mandate, the Committee will examine the report presented by the Israeli government as well as submissions and reports presented by civil society organisations to examine Israel’s compliance with the Convention.
The last time the Committee formally reviewed Israel’s periodic report was in May 2016 during its 57th session. The Committee then issued a list of concerns and recommendations that largely echoed those from previous reviews, noting Israel’s apparent failure to implement many of them. The torture and ill-treatment in Israeli detention facilities against Palestinian detainees have not only continued but significantly worsened, especially since the start of the ongoing genocide on the Gaza Strip.
PCHR’s submission, which is based on 330 testimonies collected by PCHR’s field researchers and lawyers, presents strong evidence on unprecedented, widespread torture and ill-treatment methods as well as the inhumane detention conditions that former Palestinian detainees from Gaza have been subjected to in Israeli prisons and military camps since 7 October 2023, including the use of Palestinian detainees as human shields, rape, and other acts of sexual violence.
In its submission, PCHR called on the Committee to publicly condemn the torture acts committed against Palestinian civilians and recognize that the scale and patterns of abuse amount to systematic torture in violation of Articles 1, 2, 11, 12 and 16 of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
Moreover, PCHR called on the Committee to demand Israel to end all forms of detention and ill-treatment, release all those arbitrarily detained under the Unlawful Combatants Law without delay, allow immediate and unhindered access to the International Committee of the Red Cross and lawyers, and disclose the fate and whereabouts of Palestinians forcibly disappeared by the Israeli authorities.
While the submission focused on the systematic ill-treatment and torture of 330 Palestinian former detainees arrested from Gaza over the last two years, PCHR stressed to the Committee that not only detainees and former detainees are victims of torture, but all Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, who have been subjected for two years to constant bombardment, relentless attacks, starvation, forcible displacement, and deprivation of the minimum requirements for survival, have been and continue to be victims of acts of torture as defined by the Convention.

Torture and health worker complicity in Israeli detention sites (BMJ). There is no place for the misuse of medicine as an adjunct to state repression and violence. Such practices represent an abhorrent derogation of our professional values and responsibilities and are gross violations of our Palestinian colleagues’ basic right to life, health, and dignity. Torture not only destroys the lives of its victims but health worker participation and complicity in such acts corrodes the integrity of the health professions, and all those individuals and institutions that enable it. In the face of such violations, we have a moral and legal obligation, not only to speak out, but to act.
