Esteemed Chair, Your Excellencies, Director-General,

The suffering in the Gaza Strip is beyond comprehension.

Tens of thousands of people have died, and around 30 000 have life-changing injuries.

The health system is ruined.

Malnutrition is rising. The risk of famine persists.

Families are returning to devastated neighbourhoods.

Almost no health facilities remain intact.

Our only comfort lies in the courage, dedication and resilience of the people and health workers.

Despite unimaginable challenges, health workers are maintaining health services with minimal resources.

They continue to serve even after enduring personal losses and while living with the trauma of the horrors they have seen.

Excellencies,

We are doing all we can to alleviate the suffering.

During this ceasefire, our top priority is to restore essential health services and get health facilities operational.

We continue to deliver medical supplies, fuel hospitals, respond to outbreaks and evacuate patients – all while navigating severe access constraints.

Supporting mental health is at the heart of our response.

We are ready to scale up our response.

But we urgently need systematic and sustained access to the population across Gaza, and we need an end to restrictions on the entry of essential supplies.

Equally critical is protecting civilians and health-care workers, expediting the evacuation of patients in urgent need of specialized care, and strengthening the referral system to East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

We also need massively increased funding both to meet immediate health needs and to begin restoring the health system.

In closing, I call to all parties to honour their commitments. Implement the ceasefire agreement in full and work towards a political solution to this protracted crisis.

Such a solution is essential for lasting peace and the dignity of those who have suffered for far too long.

El sufrimiento en la Franja de Gaza es incomprensible.

Decenas de miles de personas han muerto y alrededor de 30.000 han sufrido heridas que les han cambiado la vida. El sistema de salud está en ruinas. La desnutrición está aumentando. El riesgo de hambruna persiste. Las familias están regresando a los barrios devastados. Casi no quedan instalaciones sanitarias intactas.

Nuestro único consuelo reside en el coraje, la dedicación y la resiliencia de la población y de los trabajadores de la salud.

A pesar de los desafíos inimaginables, los trabajadores de la salud mantienen los servicios de salud con recursos mínimos. Siguen prestando servicios incluso después de sufrir pérdidas personales y mientras viven con el trauma de los horrores que han visto. Excelencias, Estamos haciendo todo lo posible para aliviar el sufrimiento. Durante este alto el fuego, nuestra máxima prioridad es restablecer los servicios de salud esenciales y poner en funcionamiento las instalaciones sanitarias. Seguimos entregando suministros médicos, abasteciendo de combustible a los hospitales, respondiendo a los brotes y evacuando a los pacientes, todo ello mientras sorteamos graves restricciones de acceso.

El apoyo a la salud mental es el núcleo de nuestra respuesta. Estamos listos para ampliar nuestra respuesta. Pero necesitamos urgentemente un acceso sistemático y sostenido a la población de Gaza, y necesitamos que se ponga fin a las restricciones a la entrada de suministros esenciales. Igualmente crucial es proteger a los civiles y a los trabajadores de la salud, acelerar la evacuación de los pacientes que necesitan atención especializada con urgencia y fortalecer el sistema de derivación a Jerusalén Oriental y Cisjordania.

También necesitamos un aumento masivo de la financiación tanto para satisfacer las necesidades sanitarias inmediatas como para comenzar a restablecer el sistema de salud. Para concluir, hago un llamamiento a todas las partes para que cumplan con sus compromisos. Implementen el acuerdo de alto el fuego en su totalidad y trabajen para lograr una solución política a esta crisis prolongada.

Esa solución es esencial para la paz duradera y la dignidad de quienes han sufrido durante demasiado tiempo.
