Bibliography on the Nakba
Compiled by Adrien Zakar

Introduction
This bibliography began years ago when i stumbled upon a forgotten text:
Ameen Rihani’s The Catastrophes (Al-nakabat), published in 1928.

I was first struck by the early articulation of “nakba” in the plural, an echo that seemed
to anticipate contemporary explorations of catastrophe not as a singular event, but as an ongoing rupture.

What began as a point of inquiry soon expanded, drawing me into a broader intellectual landscape where The Catastrophes found resonance alongside Constantine Zurayk’s seminal The
Meaning of Catastrophe (1948).

Upon rashid Khalidi’s encouragement, I investigated how this genealogy was woven within the intellectual and political fabric of the region while stretching beyond, into the histories of
non-arab communities.

What follows reflects this trajectory: providing a perspective that is rooted in Bilad al-Sham yet expansive in scope. It detaches “Nakba” from the itineraries of European thought and challenges
the conventional juxtaposition of the Nakba with the Holocaust.

Rather than reinforcing prior narratives initiated elsewhere, the texts assembled here illuminate the entanglements of palestine’s modern history with regional terrains from Syria and Lebanon to Kurdistan and Armenia.

The Arab press was home to generational traditions of inquiry and narration in which Nakba was not merely scripted in relation to an other, but rather theorized, debated, and contested. Periodicals such as al-Mashriq, al-Hilal, al-Arabi, al-Adab, al-Muqtataf, al-Risala, al-Bayan, and al-Thaqafa, among others, provided platforms reflecting the diversity of Palestinian  and Arab experiences to grapple conceptually with displacement, rupture, and a litany of loss.

Brought together, these texts transcend the confines of page and screen, transporting us beneath the skies of Beirut, Damascus, Cairo, Amman, Aleppo, Mardin, Baghdad, Kuwait, Tunis, Haifa, Jaffa, Nablus, and Jerusalem, and into the interconnected idioms through which catastrophe was both articulated and reconceptualized.
