Oxfam versus MSF: accepting (MSF) versus rejecting the unacceptable (Oxfam)
January 28, 2025
A spokesperson for Oxfam told that, “We will not transfer sensitive personal data to a party to the conflict since this would breach humanitarian principles, duty of care and data protection obligations.”
Oxfam said it will not share sensitive personal data with parties to the conflict, citing humanitarian and data protection obligations.
Included in the detailed information that Israel’s Ministry for Diaspora Affairs has demanded from NGOs are the passports and personal identification numbers of all Palestinian employees, as well as the names of family members, including children.
It is the doctrine that "the end justifies the means." Today this imposition, tomorrow another, and so on, a continuous blackmail to "achieve the ends." All against ethics and politics, simple submission. We will reach "symbolic violence" (when the lamb goes willingly to the slaughter). In Palestine, and in the world.
MSF statement on staff registration and the continuation of medical care in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (January 24, 2026) "Our priority remains the safety of our staff while continuing to provide essential health care for Palestinians in dire need across the West Bank and Gaza. To avoid being forced to suspend its operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory on March 1, 2026, and following unreasonable demands to hand over personal information about our staff, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has informed Israeli authorities that, as an exceptional measure, we are prepared to share a defined list of Palestinian staff and international staff names, subject to clear parameters with staff safety at its core.
We must to stop this drift. See the Health Workers For Palestine UK (HW4PUK) statement: "Protect Palestinian Healthcare Workers".
Health Workers for Palestine, Spain, supports the HW4PUK' statement and we ask that sensitive personal data of NGOs not be shared with Israel.
The Palestinian NGO network (PNGO) issued a statement expressing its “strong disapproval of a limited number of international non-governmental organizations that have shared information relating to their local staff under pressure from the Israeli occupation as a condition for organizational registration.”
The Network calls for the strengthening of a unified stance rejecting these transgressions and the unlawful conditions imposed by the occupying power, and urges international organizations to refrain from sharing any information regarding their staff with the Israeli occupation.
Renowned British-Palestinian surgeon Ghassan Abu Sittah condemned MSF’s decision.
“The moral bankruptcy lies in the implication that during a genocide, Palestinians are capable of making free consent. Their employees have as much choice as the Palestinians who knowingly went to their death at the feeding stations to feed their families.”
He added, “Assurances by a genocidal power that has already killed 562 aid workers further implicates MSF in the crimes and does not absolve it from its duty of care under EU law.”
